As far back as I can remember, this was the central idea of my childhood. I asked everyone who would listen (even the Tooth Fairy). I begged my parents separately, hoping that one of them would give in. I rummaged through bags of discarded rubbish at the side of the road, hoping that a warm bundle of fur was hiding underneath, just waiting for me to take it home and care for it forever. Unfortunately, my wish didn't come true. I had to wait twenty-three years until I finally found my soulmate.
With dogs, it doesn't matter if you take them for a walk, play ball, or take out the bins: if the human is happy, the dog is happy too. This fact has had an incredible impact on my life.
My dog was my ultimate cheerleader. Ordinary tasks were no longer ordinary. I had to take a letter to the post office? I just had to go near her leash and it was as if I had told her she had won ten million in the lottery, all because of the prospect of being able to go somewhere with me. We sleep cuddled up under the duvet, our bodies pressed against each other as if she were the missing puzzle piece I'd always needed. She eats the crusts off my toast in the morning, she licks up every spill in the kitchen, she barks when I'm threatened by the doorbell, and the best part is that she listens silently when I pour out my heart to her about everything going on in my complex brain. The most beautiful thing about dogs, however, is their loyalty. I've had best friends over the years who were incredibly loyal. Who defended my honour in a WhatsApp group or told me a boy was ugly after he broke up with me. BUT I'd never had a best friend before who literally licked the tears from my cheeks when I cried. She senses when I'm down before I even realise it myself, and she doesn't leave my side because her intuition tells her that I NEED her. That's something very special. Dogs are something very special.
What other animal can be trained to save lives? I will never forget the images in the news after the 9/11 terrorist attack, when the service dogs searched for survivors in the rubble. Or my client, who told me when I was working as a hairdresser that her son with diabetes has a dog that slept next to his bed and would come and wake her up if the son had an attack. The obedience and devotion they show to their owner are simply overwhelming. With every TikTok video I replay on a loop and every dog Instagram account I follow, the sheer admiration I feel for these animals grows.
